Some may call me obsessive, some may say it’s the only way to be. But as my Father used to say “If you’re going to do a job, do it properly or don’t do it at all…” And that’s my exact approach to vehicle welding. If it’s done properly, you wouldn’t know it’s been welded at all!
For a number of years, I had my own garage specialising in repairing and restoring LDV Convoys. Vans that are renowned for ending up like a Fred Flintstone vehicle! Needless to say, I’ve welded an uncountable number of LDVs as well and many other makes and models.
And the truth? I love welding old vehicles. Yeah, I know, most would say I’m crazy! I can’t deny I might be a tad crazy but above and beyond everything, I absolutely love keeping old vehicles on the road. The satisfaction of knowing my work keeps vehicles in tip top condition is immense!
Now let’s get something straight… When we’re talking vehicles, the term “welding” actually means a lot more! In fact, the “welding” part is what takes the least time! Fabrication is the art behind it all and fully treating your finished work is the key to a long life, rot free. When rust is removed and replaced with new metal, there should be no real evidence that there was ever rot there in the first place!
I work completely mobile. I come to you to do the work. You’re welcome to supply the metal or I can bring it with me. If you’re going to supply it, please talk to me first because it’s important to use the right stuff, unless you want it to rot through again this time next year. A sheet of bare mild steel is not the way forward. If replacement panels are needed, please do go ahead and have those ready for when I arrive as I don’t supply panels.
Keeping things realistic – I am a mobile vehicle welder which means I do not have ramps to lift your vehicle up in the air. So if the work that needs doing requires ramps for access, you may need to source a place with ramps for me to do the work.
Whilst a mains electricity supply is always a bonus, it’s not essential as I am self powered. So if you’re off-grid or a nomadic vehicle dweller, that’s absolutely no problem. I’m happy to work in random carparks, and laybys if that works for you!
Vehicle welding can be tricky to quote for because you often don’t know how much work is needed. I will always do my best to accurately estimate the number of hours needed and I’m happy to cap the price so you know where we’re at.
As always, if the work is being done outdoors, weather is a key factor. Believe it or not, rain isn’t the biggest enemy for welding (best avoided though!) – the big problem is wind. Wind blows the welding gas away before it does its job! I have a massive pull out canopy you can drive under if it’s raining – or even better, hot sun!!
Finally, for those who are curious – I use an Argon/CO2 Gas MIG Welder. I do not use a gasless MIG welder, they are in my opinion for very basic, budget DIY use only.
I charge the same for welding as I do for anything else I do which is £35 per hour plus consumables. If I’m having to travel a distance to get to you, we may have to agree a fuel contribution.
